Loving Crèche Work

I have worked for CLIP crèches for over two years now, and have made lots of great friends. We always run a crèche with at least two of us, and sometimes are lucky to have an extra busy crèche where we can all work together. We are based in Penhill but get the chance to work in different crèches around Swindon, which is great, as we are always meeting new people and families.

I have looked after babies as young as 6 weeks old, up to children who are about to start school. We get to see the children grow up in one of the most exciting stages of their development. I have seen some very special moments in their life, such as taking their first few steps of walking, to hearing their first few words. We also get to send them home with lots of special art work, sometimes their first drawings! When you come across them out of the crèche they are often excited to see you. I have even bumped in to one family in Weston Super Mare!

It is often the first time many of the children have been left with anyone other than a family member, so it is great when parents come back in and see them settled and playing with other children; even babies we have as young as 4months love to ‘play’ together! It is a very rewarding job and it’s nice to know you can become part of a child’s early memories. Lisa Thompson

Air training corps (Stratton),

This successful group have 52 cadets. Some live in Penhill. Their band, led by Alan Baker, was recorded for a Swindon 105.5 FM programme. For more information: www.2003squadron.org.uk

Pride of Swindon Award

Swindon’s Town Crier (and Penhill resident) Fred Ferris has just been given The Pride Of Swindon Award. The last time Fred was awarded this honour was in 2010.

Penhill Players’ Plans

The AGM in March was well supported. A new committee was formed and next January’s pantomime was decided by vote; it is going to be Sleeping Beauty.

In the meantime the group is planning their contributions to Carnival Week. They also intend to run a summer holiday scheme. For more details contact Eddie on 01793-323474

Dance Classes Celebrate First Birthday

In February, a party was held at St Peters Church, to celebrate one year of Dance in Penhill. The children played party games including musical statues with a dance theme, pass the parcel and pin the ballet shoes on the dancer. A birthday tea was enjoyed by all, including sandwiches, jelly and ice cream and a special birthday cake to mark the occasion. All children sang happy birthday and helped with blowing the candle out. Miss Denise would like to thank all of the parents and grandparents for helping out on the day and making the day such a success.

The summer term commences on Saturday 21 April in the John Moulton Hall. 10.45am for 2½yrs +, 11.15am Ballet for 5-6yr olds, 11.45am Tap for 5yr+, 12.15pm Ballet for 7yrs+. The dance classes provide children with a chance to learn dance, as well as build confidence, social skills, co-ordination and movement. The focus for this term will be to learning a dance to perform at the Penhill Carnival Performance in July.

As well as offering classes for children, there are also two classes running for adults in Tap and Ballet. Adult classes are at St. Peter’s Hall on Thursdays from 19th April, 7pm for Tap, 8pm for Ballet. For more information, please contact Miss Denise on 07732 971398.

The tutor is open to ‘tailor make’ the future sessions – if enough people are interested and come to discuss what the options are. Come and see whether you can learn something new, get good advice and start a new hobby for yourself. Spring is almost here….

New broadcasting time on Swindon 105.5 is every first Friday of the month from 3 – 4pm with repeat on the following Sunday 2-3pm.

New Music Group
The sessions are going really well. Anyone else interested in learning (or teaching) is invited to go along to the John Moulton Hall.
Thursdays 4 – 4.30pm children guitar, 4.30 – 5pm children piano. Thursday 4 – 5pm adults guitar.

Boundary Changes
When we vote for local councillors in May we will be in the new Penhill & Upper Stratton ward. The ward does not include homes south of Seven Fields but does include those living in Queensfield, Kingdown and Upper Stratton. Polling Stations in Penhill will be St. Peter’s Church Hall and the United Reformed Church hall.

Lets Party Penhill Style!

Swindon Borough Council is encouraging us all to have a street party for the Queens Jubilee celebrations on 2nd and 3rd of June by lifting any charges that might normally be levelled, and offering guidance. They have also stated that they want to make it easy for people to hold these sorts of local events successfully, and they were certainly very helpful last year when the Penhill Carnival was revived. The Council is encouraging locals to get their applications in early, cut off date being 7th May.

Those interested should contact Street Works Team on 01793 466380, email streetworks@swindon.gov.uk for advice and application forms. So come on Penhill, let’s show the rest of Swindon how we can party!!
